Air Quality

Checking Current & Forecast Air Quality

During an event where outdoor air quality may be unhealthy, we use Air Quality Index (AQI) data from AirNow.gov.

During wildfire season, we may also reference the Washington Smoke Bog - a partnership between state, county, and federal agencies, and Tribes to collectively share info for Washington communities affected by wildfire smoke.

Washington Children and Youth Activities Guide for Air Quality

The following public health recommendations are to protect children and youth (18 years and younger) from fine particle air pollution (PM2.5). Apply this guide to school, child care, athletic practices & games, before & after school programs, camps, field trips, and other outdoor programming activities.

Questions & Answers

  • When air quality is moderate to unhealthy, the school HVAC system is adjusted to bring in more filtered air, and windows and doors may be closed or opened to further reduce the amount of outside air entering the building. Additionally, our custodial staff routinely inspects air filter systems and replaces them as necessary to ensure air quality is maintained. Furthermore, we are in contact with local health departments and other agencies to stay abreast of any changes in air quality and will adjust our air quality measures accordingly.

  • Yes, parents have the right to make decisions regarding the health and well-being of their student. If you feel that keeping a student home due to air quality is in their best interests, their absence will be excused.
